What East Bay baby proofing actually looks like in Craftsman, Victorian, and hillside homes across Oakland, Berkeley, Piedmont, and Alameda.
What's different about East Bay homes
Most of the homes we proof in Oakland, Berkeley, Piedmont, Albany, and Alameda were built before 1950. That means narrow staircases without modern gate-mounting points, original hardware on cabinets and doors, single-pane windows that open wide, and a lot of beautiful built-ins that double as climbing risks. None of this is a problem, but it changes which products actually work.
The hazards that come up on nearly every assessment
- Unanchored furniture. Dressers, bookcases, and TVs in earthquake-country are the single highest-priority fix. We anchor to studs, not just the wall.
- Steep, narrow staircases. Many East Bay Craftsmans and Victorians need custom-width pressure gates at the bottom and hardware-mounted gates at the top. Off-the-shelf gates often don't fit.
- Hillside decks and railings. Berkeley, Oakland Hills, and Piedmont homes frequently have railings with gaps wider than a soda can. Plexi or mesh infill is the standard fix.
- Original hardware. Cabinet pulls, doorknobs, and window latches from 1920 do not accept modern adhesive locks. We bring magnetic and strap options that work on real wood.
- Single-pane windows. Window stops or guards on any window above the ground floor, especially in Berkeley flats and Oakland Craftsmans with low sills.
- Fireplaces. Original brick hearths are common; padded hearth bumpers and a gate around the surround are usually needed.
Neighborhood notes
Oakland and Berkeley flats. Long hallway layouts mean two or three gates instead of one. Plan for it.
Piedmont and Oakland Hills. Multi-level homes with outdoor stairs and pools. Pool fencing and self-closing gates are non-negotiable.
Alameda. Older Victorians with steep stairs to the front door and narrow back staircases to the kitchen. Two gates per staircase is common.
Walnut Creek, Lafayette, Orinda. Newer construction, but open floor plans and pool access drive most of the work.
What it should cost
