Most national baby proofing companies sell hardware first and assess your home second. The real value is the assessment: a trained set of eyes walking your floor plan, identifying the small handful of changes that actually reduce injuries, and giving you a prioritized plan you can act on. Installation is the easy part.

A good Bay Area baby proofer should be willing to tell you what not to buy. If every recommendation comes with a product link, that is sales, not safety.

• San Francisco Victorians and Edwardians. Steep, narrow staircases with wide banister spindles, original windows without modern stops, and clawfoot tubs that scald fast. Hardware-mounted gates are non-negotiable here.
• SOMA, Mission Bay, and Oakland condos. Floor-to-ceiling windows, glass balcony railings, and induction cooktops that stay hot longer than they look. Window stops, glass film, and stove knob covers do the heavy lifting.
• Peninsula and Marin single-family homes. Pools, hot tubs, and multi-level decks. A four-sided self-latching pool fence is the single highest- impact change you can make. Skip the cover, get the fence.
• East Bay craftsman and bungalow homes. Unanchored built-ins, original cabinetry without soft-close hinges, and detached garages with chemicals at toddler height. Anchoring and a locked utility area solve most of it.
• ADUs and in-law units. Often shared with grandparents who keep medications on counters. A locked medication box is the simplest, highest-value fix.

In the Bay Area, a thorough in-home assessment from a trained professional runs $300 to $700 depending on home size, with hardware and installation billed separately. Anything significantly cheaper is usually a walk-through with a product upsell. Anything significantly higher should include CPR certification, a car seat install, or both.

Our Before Baby Visit is a 3-hour, in-home session led by a working Bay Area Paramedic who is also a CPST and AHA Heartsaver Instructor. You get a personalized child proofing plan and shopping list for your specific home, CPR certification for every adult in the household, and a CPST car seat install with hands-on teaching, all in one appointment. Installation of the recommended childproofing hardware is offered as a separate add-on visit.
