Car seat installation in the Bay Area.

Roughly half of car seats are installed incorrectly, and the most common errors, loose belt path, wrong recline angle, twisted harness, are the ones that fail in a crash. A Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) is nationally certified through Safe Kids Worldwide and trained on hundreds of seat and vehicle combinations. That is the credential you actually want, not "we sell car seats."

• Fire stations. Some San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and Marin stations have a CPST on staff and offer free checks by appointment. Availability is inconsistent and waitlists run weeks long.
• Hospital car seat clinics. UCSF, CPMC, Lucile Packard, and Kaiser run occasional check events. Usually 15 to 20 minute slots, fine for a quick check, not a teaching install.
• CHP and county Safe Kids events. Free community check events held a few times a year across Bay Area counties. Watch local listings.
• In-home CPST install. A certified tech comes to you, installs the seat in your specific vehicle, and teaches you to do it yourself so you can move the seat between cars and reinstall after rideshares.

• Seat is installed using either lower anchors (LATCH) or the vehicle seatbelt, never both at the same time.
• Less than 1 inch of movement at the belt path when pushed side to side and front to back.
• Rear-facing recline angle within the manufacturer's marked range for your child's age.
• Harness straps at or below the shoulders for rear-facing, at or above for forward-facing.
• Chest clip at armpit level, harness pinch-tested at the collarbone (no slack to pinch).
• Top tether attached for any forward-facing install.

If your tech installs it and leaves without making you do it twice yourself, you did not get the full value of the appointment.

Hills change things. Steep San Francisco and Oakland hills affect the apparent recline angle of a rear-facing seat when parked, but the install is set on level ground using the seat's level indicator. Compact Bay Area garages and tight street parking make it harder to fully open a rear door, so we install with the door position you'll actually use, not the idealized one.

Rideshare and grandparent vehicles are a Bay Area constant. Plan for at least one easy-to-reinstall seat (a quality convertible with a clear belt path) if your child will frequently ride in other cars.

Every Before Baby Visit includes a CPST install of one seat in the primary vehicle, plus hands-on teaching so you can install in any car you own. We bring the level, the belt-shortening clips, and the patience to let you do it twice before we leave. Additional vehicles or seats can be added.
